Slips, trips and falls are a leading cause of workplace injuries. In fact, almost 30 percent of injuries that result in days away from work are related to these types of accidents. Hazardous conditions, unsafe behavior and a lack of safety awareness can all lead to slips, trips and falls, but fortunately, there are steps we can all take to avoid them.
Be aware of hazards. Exercise caution when navigating hidden steps, smooth surfaces, wet floors, loose or irregular surfaces, oil and grease, icy stairs, obstructed aisles and areas with poor lighting.
Refrain from bad habits. There are specific behaviors that can lead to slips, trips and falls. Avoid walking too fast, running or rapidly changing direction. Always watch where you are going, wear proper footwear, carry materials or products in a way that does not obstruct your view, and remove sunglasses in low-light areas.
Pay attention. Eliminate distractions such as cell phones and maintain an organized workspace free of debris and clutter.
Adjust your mindset. Instead of, “I have to do whatever it takes to get the job done and on time,” change your perspective to, “I’m going to get the job done safely.”
Communicate. Always assess, discuss and review near misses and injuries with your safety manager. Point out defects at store locations to alert other drivers.
Think, “CPC” (Commitment, Protection, Control). To correct bad or risky behaviors, all team members must make the commitment to be responsible for their personal safety. They can take the steps to protect themselves and their co-workers and they alone have the control to do so.
