In early 2004, Marty Nelson had never heard of CPC Logistics. He was driving for a mail contractor when he noticed a new Walgreens distribution center being built in Perrysburg, Ohio. He began seeing truck driver ads in his local paper for CPC Logistics, which was in the process of hiring drivers for Walgreens. “I applied once but did not get hired,” Marty said. “I was persistent and kept trying until I was finally hired in April 2004.”
Marty started out on the “extra” board doing store deliveries, but he quickly progressed to a bid route within four months. The driver base was expanding quickly due to the growth of Walgreens and additional stores being added at the distribution center.
“One day after running my afternoon route, Jacob Klingbeil, Fleet Manager at Walgreens, asked if I had ever worked in an office,” Marty said. “I told him I had previously been a manager at Oldcastle Glass. He asked if I would help in the dispatch office, and I agreed. I did that off and on over the next five to six years.”
Eventually, CPC Operations Manager Tom Gump asked Marty if he would take the Smith System course to prepare for a driver training role. After Tom’s passing, Max Clary was named Operations Manager and Jim Ponder became their CPC Division Manager. Together, Jim and Max worked to verify Marty’s safe driving record between 11 years with CPC and 14 years from his previous employer. He was then presented the prestigious One Million Mile Award. Jim started talking with Marty about moving up to a CPC management position, but Marty was not quite ready to make the transition.
In March 2016, Max approached Marty again to ask if he would reconsider a management position at CPC. After an interview with Division Manager Scott Moormann, Marty accepted the Operations Manager role for the Perrysburg, Ohio, location.
“Over the past years of being a manager, I have met and hired some of the best drivers and professionals I have ever met,” Marty said. “The CPC Logistics staff, no matter who it was, has always been there for me whenever a question came up or I just needed someone to talk to. I have been assigned to two of the best division managers I could ever ask for: Scott Moormann and Bill Koons. I would also like to thank CPC President Butch Wallis for seeing something in me and allowing me to be part of his management team.”
“Marty has exemplified a true professional both when he was a driver with CPC and when he moved to management,” Butch said. “He took pride in what he did and conducted himself in a manner that positively influenced everyone around him. His optimistic attitude and ability to calmly handle anything that was put in front of him made him an asset to CPC, his customer and most importantly, the drivers he worked with and oversaw. When you make others better by working with them, you lift everyone up, and that is what Marty did.”
The CPC team is grateful for Marty’s 18 years of dedicated service and wishes him the best in the next chapter of his life.
