Slips, trips and falls continue to be among the primary causes of injuries for drivers. Various factors contribute to these occurrences, such as inadequately maintained walking surfaces at customer sites and truck stops, inappropriate footwear, absence of steps and handles on vehicles, insufficient lighting, and adverse outdoor weather conditions.
While there is no universal solution, implementing these five preventive measures can significantly decrease the risk of slips, trips or falls.
Choose comfortable footwear with appropriate slip-resistant soles. WorkSafe tip: Utilize ice cleats for enhanced traction during winter conditions.
Inform vehicle maintenance staff about any damaged or absent steps or handles.
Ensure your hands are free when entering or exiting the vehicle to maintain three points of contact. WorkSafe tip: Use a bag or backpack to carry items or place them inside the vehicle before climbing in or out.
Carry a flashlight or headlamp to navigate poorly lit areas at customer facilities.
Be vigilant for hazards such as potholes, cracked pavement, broken steps, and snow-covered or icy walkways at both company and customer locations. Report any identified hazards to facilitate their correction.
