Why Truck Drivers Prefer Private Fleets

Today’s professional truck drivers aren’t just looking for a paycheck. They want stability, respect and a career they can count on for the long haul. By offering these advantages and more, private fleets attract the trucking industry’s top talent.

What Makes Private Fleets Attractive to Drivers?

Private fleets operate differently than traditional for-hire carriers. Instead of chasing freight on the open market, they transport goods for a single company, creating a more controlled and predictable environment for drivers. That difference shows up in several key ways:

  • Top-tier compensation packages. Private fleet drivers are among the best compensated in the industry. The 2025 National Private Truck Council (NPTC) Benchmarking Survey Report shows average annual pay exceeding $90,000, with top earners reaching well into six figures. Beyond pay, drivers often receive comprehensive benefits starting on day one, including medical, dental, life insurance and compensation for non-driving tasks like inspections. This total compensation package creates financial stability that drivers value.
  • More consistent schedules and home time. Instead of making long, irregular hauls, many private fleet drivers run regional or dedicated routes. In 2025, the average annual mileage per heavy-duty unit dropped to 80,400 miles, which is the lowest in NPTC survey history. More consistent schedules lead to more time at home, which continues to rank as a top priority for drivers.
  • Industry-leading safety standards. Private fleets consistently outperform the broader trucking industry in safety. Private fleets logged just 0.49 Department of Transportation (DOT) recordable accidents per million miles in 2025, three times safer than the industry average. Private fleets achieve these significantly lower accident rates by employing strict hiring standards and ongoing safety training as well as investing in modern equipment and technology. Drivers benefit from working in environments where safety isn’t just encouraged but embedded in the culture.
  • Stability and consistency. Because private fleets manage their own freight, drivers don’t have to worry about load availability or rate fluctuations. Routes are familiar, schedules are steady and pay is predictable. This level of consistency removes much of the uncertainty that drivers experience in other industry sectors.
  • Lower turnover. Private fleets are known for retaining drivers at far higher rates than for-hire carriers. While turnover for larger for-hire carriers can approach 100 percent annually, private fleets maintain a dramatically lower rate of 18.4 percent. It’s not uncommon for drivers to stay with a private fleet for a decade or more, which is proof that these roles offer true career potential.
  • A culture of respect. Perhaps most importantly, private fleet drivers are often treated as an extension of the company they represent. They are brand ambassadors, not just drivers. That translates into better communication, stronger relationships and a workplace culture where drivers feel valued.

How CPC Logistics Brings These Benefits to Drivers

CPC Logistics partners with many of the nation’s top private fleets and designs its driver careers around the same advantages today’s professionals are seeking. CPC’s approach is built around creating the right environment for long-term success, not just filling positions.

  • Competitive pay and benefits. CPC offers consistent and competitive compensation models. Roles also include benefits like medical, dental and life insurance starting on day one, along with structured pay increases over time.
  • Routes that support work-life balance. Local placements that offer dedicated routes and reliable schedules help CPC drivers maintain the work-life balance they want without sacrificing earning potential.
  • A safety-first culture. Safety is at the core of everything CPC does. By hiring experienced professionals with a track record of safe driving, meeting strict DOT and customer compliance standards, maintaining continuous oversight of drivers, and using the latest technology, CPC ensures drivers operate in the safest environment possible. CPC’s accident rate is seven times lower than the trucking industry average and 2.4 times lower than the private fleet industry average.
  • Ongoing support and communication. CPC’s relationship with drivers extends beyond onboarding. An experienced team of managers and supervisors maintain consistent communication and support through regular safety meetings, ride-alongs, coaching and more, ensuring drivers have the knowledge and resources they need throughout their careers.
  • Long-term career opportunities. Many CPC drivers stay for 10, 20 or even 30 years. That kind of longevity is the result of trust, consistency and a commitment to doing things the right way.
  • Meaningful recognition. CPC is proud to celebrate drivers’ commitment to excellence through programs such as Driver of the Month, Driver of the Year, and Million Milers. Drivers are also nominated for and frequently earn industry-wide recognition, including National Private Truck Council Driver Hall of Fame and Driver All-Star awards.

The Bottom Line

Truck drivers today are making more intentional career choices, and private fleets continue to stand out for offering what they want most. CPC is proud to deliver those same advantages by connecting experienced drivers with opportunities where they can succeed today and build for the future.
