Starting a Private Fleet Is Easier Than You Think

For many transportation and logistics leaders, the idea of starting a private fleet is intimidating — complex, expensive and resource-heavy. But the truth is, launching a private fleet is much easier than most people think, especially with an experienced partner providing guidance.

CPC Logistics has managed every aspect of private fleet operations for some of the world’s most respected brands for more than 50 years. Along the way, CPC has helped companies of all sizes realize that establishing a private fleet is often as simple as deciding to take control over their costs, service and safety performance.

Below, we show just how accessible a private fleet can be.

How Many Trucks Do You Need? Just One.

A common assumption is that private fleets require dozens — even hundreds — of trucks to justify the investment. Not true. You can launch a private fleet with a single truck.

“A lot of people think establishing a fleet is a herculean task, but it’s not,” said CPC Director of Operations Landon Reef. “You can start small and scale based on the results.”

CPC supports fleets of nearly any size, from small, dedicated routes to multi-state operations. There is no minimum threshold. If one truck helps you achieve your operational goals in a key part of your supply chain network, that is enough to get started.

“The option to rent or lease a truck makes it even easier for many companies,” Landon said. “It requires lower upfront costs, access to the latest equipment, and the ability to easily scale up or down.”

Do You Have to Use a Private Fleet for Your Entire Supply Chain? No.

A private fleet does not have to be an all-or-nothing decision. Many companies dip their toes in by applying the model to strategic regions, high-priority routes or lanes where consistency, service or security matter the most. From there, they expand as they see the benefits.

“Start focused, prove the model and grow at your pace,” Landon said. “If you are working with a dedicated carrier that is consistently failing on a route, and you want to provide excellent service at the right cost with an outstanding safety rate, then a private fleet could be right for you,” Landon said. “All you need to do is rent or lease one truck and give CPC a call. We’ll provide an experienced driver who will get the job done. Once you start seeing results, look at other lanes where you’re having issues, and see if it makes sense to scale.”

How Much Does It Really Cost? It Depends — But Often Less Than You Think.

Fleet costs vary based on equipment, staffing, geography and operational needs. CPC works directly with companies to evaluate whether owning or partially operating a fleet is financially sound.

Often, a private fleet unlocks savings through:

  • Predictable operating costs.
  • Reduced reliance on the spot market.
  • Improved efficiency.
  • Better control over service and capacity.

Private fleets often pay for themselves through stability and performance.

“You can’t sell what isn’t on the shelf,” Landon said. “Companies realize that when they are able to consistently and safely get products where they need to go on time with their private fleets, their sales increase.”

Proof Point

One global consumer goods company partnered with CPC to launch a small private fleet and quickly realized the advantages. What began with 28 drivers scaled to more than 600 in just a few years.

“We started with runs that were operational burdens for the company,” Landon said. “Where the dedicated carrier was failing, the private fleet succeeded with on-time delivery rates over 99 percent. From there, the company scaled at a pace that was right for them.”
