Healthy drivers are the backbone of fleet operations. That’s why CPC Logistics has partnered with Lockton Nurse Advocates (LNA)—a comprehensive, proactive health support system and program tailored to fit drivers’ unique needs—for more than nine years.
What is the LNA Program?
As part of the program, CPC’s dedicated nurse advocate Mandy Francis, RN helps drivers manage and improve their health, including preparing drivers for the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination. The exam, which assesses if someone is physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle, is important to a driver’s continued career, safety and livelihood. They must take and pass it every 24 months.
“Once we can get past the exam, I aim to help keep them healthy from that point forward,” Mandy said.
Personalized care plans to address health challenges, risk factors and chronic conditions are shaped around each driver’s exam results. From navigating complex healthcare options to providing advice on managing ailments, the LNA program is an extension of each driver’s healthcare network.
“There is not a single person who is not affected by the work truck drivers do,” Mandy said. “Therefore, it is our No. 1 priority to keep them healthy and get them home safe at the end of each day.”
Participation in the program is voluntary. Drivers’ personal health information is kept confidential and private. It is not shared with anyone at CPC nor insurance carriers. CPC and LNA strictly adhere to HIPAA, the federal privacy law regarding the protection of personal health information.
Key features of the LNA program include:
- Long-term, holistic health support: Nurse advocates will focus on chronic disease prevention, lifestyle changes and best practices to reduce health risks, helping drivers set health goals and track their progress.
- Proactive outreach: Drivers may receive a call from CPC’s LNA if they schedule an appointment on the LNA scheduling portal, have been screened at risk for metabolic syndrome or experienced increased health risks. Drivers can engage with nurse advocates even if they don’t receive a call.
- Connection to resources: Nurse advocates provide recommendations for in-network doctors and answer health-related questions, bridging communication between drivers and their primary care provider (PCP). They also assist drivers with understanding and utilizing their insurance benefits.
Who is CPC’s Nurse Advocate?
Mandy is a licensed registered nurse with nearly two decades of healthcare experience. Skilled in chronic disease prevention and management with a background running urgent care clinics, she is well-equipped to service CPC drivers. Her personalized and thorough approach builds trust among drivers and has helped them discover rare or overlooked causes of health problems.
For example, when a CPC driver experienced unexplained spikes in his blood pressure, Mandy connected him to a PCP. His treatment plan included 24-hour blood pressure monitoring over several months.
“Through the testing, we discovered the driver was chewing licorice root, which can cause side effects such as increased blood pressure and decreased potassium levels when consumed in large amounts or for long periods of time,” Mandy said. “As an LNA, I go the extra mile for drivers and dig deeper to find the source of their symptoms.”
Another driver reversed his type 2 diabetes and lost more than 90 pounds with Mandy’s help.
“We periodically follow up with this driver to ensure he maintains his health, and we encourage him to call us anytime if he needs support,” Mandy said. “He’s still non-diabetic, doesn’t need to take medication and is in good health. It’s gratifying to see drivers reach their goals.”
Mandy also provides advice to drivers on common health issues they may face such as sleep apnea, obesity and back pain.
“It’s my privilege to help CPC drivers lead healthier lives for themselves and their families,” Mandy said. “I urge them all to take advantage of the service because it is truly for their benefit.”
