CPC Logistics Director of Safety Isaac Harmon and Luma Brighter Learning CEO Dr. Gina Anderson lent their expertise to a recent Supply Chain Management Review (SCMR) article about the benefits of microlearning.
Microlearning is a training method that focuses on delivering small, frequent chunks of information.
“When I think of microlearning, I think about it from a neuroscience perspective,” Dr. Anderson told SCMR. “To understand the science behind how we learn is critical in (key situations). Our minds have been studying the YouTube generation and YouTube videos and when our minds start to drift. Once you get their attention, when is it before our minds start to wander? Recent studies are showing around 8 to 9 seconds.”
CPC uses Luma’s eNugget learning management system platform, which offers more than a thousand micro-lessons called eNuggets that cover orientation, driver safety training, human resources and employee training, last mile delivery, warehouse safety, and OSHA standards, as well as content for Canadian fleets. When a new driver is hired at CPC, they must complete a series of eNuggets during their first week. If any CPC driver has an accident, they are required to review eNuggets pertaining to that specific incident. CPC managers can also assign eNuggets if they feel a driver needs to review certain procedures.
“[Drivers] plan their days down to the minute, so you have to be very direct in what you give them so you are not giving them too much information,” Harmon told SCMR. “If you are doing winter driving, you want to give them just winter driving. Luma has shown us how to customize our learning paths by client. We have general training paths and specific training paths. We don’t want to flood a new hire [with information] that is not really relevant to them, so we tailor and customize.”
CPC’s partnership with Luma has helped ensure a culture of safety. CPC currently has more than 155 drivers who have driven more than 1 million miles without causing an accident or injury; 104 National Private Truck Council (NPTC) Driver All-Stars; and 12 NPTC Hall of Fame drivers.
