Linnette Torres, CPC Logistics’ senior manager of recruiting, recently published an article in Global Trade Magazine titled, “Communication is Key: How to Recruit Truck Drivers During a Shortage.”
The trucking industry is currently grappling with a shortage of 78,000 truck drivers and a need to hire 1.2 million new ones over the next decade to meet demand. Linnette believes there is more to recruiting drivers than simply offering competitive pay, incentives and benefits. To make their jobs appealing, companies need to provide good work-life balance, show drivers they are valued, and establish a culture of communication.
“Drivers want to work for organizations where communication is part of the culture,” Linnette writes. “With so many moving parts, clear and consistent communication is vital to ensuring everything runs smoothly.”
In the article, Linnette offers six ways recruiters—the first people drivers usually speak with when applying for a job—can demonstrate their company’s communication skills:
- Listening
- Providing updates
- Being honest
- Using clear and concise advertising
- Making applying easy
- Answering the phone
“The most successful recruiters will see the individuals behind the applications and use their communication skills to set themselves and their companies apart,” Linnette writes.
