The spring-cleaning season is a good time for drivers to remember the importance of a well-maintained truck. Going above and beyond CPC Logistics’ required pre-trip inspection can not only enhance your equipment’s longevity, but also help make the road safer and your workspace healthier. Whether it’s the interior or exterior of your truck, CPC Senior Operations and Safety Manager Isaac Harmon outlines seven areas where you should implement regular cleaning and maintenance routines.
Windshield
On a long haul, you never know what circumstances or weather you may face. Rain or shine, a clear windshield is critical to your ability to see what’s ahead of you. Utilize the cleaning supplies and tools provided at dispatch centers and fueling stations to clear away any dirt, debris or bugs from the windshield whenever possible.
Another way to ensure enhanced visibility is maintaining your windshield wipers. Check that wipers and wiper fluid are working properly and not leaving streaks that might obstruct your view.
Mirrors
Just as important as your windshield for basic operation, side mirrors are your eyes to what is around your vehicle. Using a lint-free cloth and glass cleaner can help remove streaks and smudges that can obstruct the view of your blind spots and surroundings on turns.
Lights
Clean headlights can make all the difference in preventing accidents at night or in fog. A thorough wipe down and polish with the proper materials will help get rid of any cloudiness dimming your lights.
Keeping the pigtail that powers your trailer lights secured properly is also important. These wires, stored alongside the airlines, must be properly stored and untangled. Improperly stored wires can damage equipment and be a safety hazard.
Tires
As the primary cause of semi-truck breakdowns, tires are vital to monitor and maintain. Make sure to inspect tires for cleanliness (hub leaks or frayed rubber), air pressure and tread depth before and after each trip. This is especially important when traveling through the many construction zones that tend to pop up in the spring and cause tires to pick up debris or even puncture.
In-Cab
Maintaining a clean truck cab creates a better driving experience and helps prevent the spread of illness for all the other drivers who may enter it. Be sure to regularly:
- Disinfect seats, the steering wheel, buttons and door handles.
- Clean up food, trash and crumbs.
- Check for a clean air filter.
Leaving food, trash and crumbs can attract pests and cause unpleasant odors while disinfecting can help you stay healthy.
Trailer
Keep your trailer clear of trash and debris, especially while loading and unloading. It is important to establish a clear exit path from the trailer in case of an emergency. Any damaged products or spills should be picked up using supplies provided at drop-off locations or distribution centers.
Under the Hood
Required for pre-trip inspections, you should check under the hood of the truck for any indication of fluid leaks. If undetected, they can lead to serious consequences, ranging from braking and steering issues to total engine failure.
This spring-cleaning season, be respectful of your vehicle and other drivers by maintaining a tidy truck and workspace.
