Because many companies with private fleets own their equipment, they are free to implement the latest truck technology to improve safety, efficiency and compliance. However, finding skilled and reliable experts to install, maintain and repair the technology can be a challenge. That is where Don Hill and Joey Velasquez come in.
As Transportation Equipment Coordinators and Technicians for CPC Logistics, Don and Joey work with one of CPC’s customers to put truck fleet technology such as Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and cameras into trucks and fix any issues that may arise.
“I love working with my hands and solving problems,” Don said. “The job is challenging, but I am all about being challenged.”
Don’s passion for servicing trucks began when he was a professional driver. For over three decades, he logged more than 3 million miles without an accident or ticket and was recognized as a National Private Truck Council National Driver All-Star. From 2019 to 2022, Don drove 130,000 miles and completed 400 shipments to support the CPC customer whose trucks he currently works on.
“I’ve always been interested in technology and have lots of experience with every type of truck,” Don said. “It’s gratifying to know that when I walk away from a truck, the driver can get right in and won’t have any problems.”
Due to the demands of the job and size of the customer’s fleet, Don trained Joey to cover trucks in the southern area of the country in 2024. With a background in welding and HVAC, Joey was a quick learner.
“We play a big role in making sure the fleet stays moving,” Joey said. “When an ELD or camera is not working in a truck, it’s out of commission until it’s fixed. That’s why when something goes wrong, we immediately go to wherever the truck is to get it back up and running as soon as possible.”
To keep up with installations, maintenance and repairs, Don and Joey are on call every day of the week and away from home for most of the year.
“Between the skill and travel requirements, it takes a special kind of person to be a truck fleet equipment coordinator,” said Landon Reef, Director of Operations for CPC. “When a problem arises, they get in a van with their mobile inventory of parts and tools and drive across state lines. Sometimes they are gone for a week or two at a time.”
With advanced technologies becoming increasingly essential in the trucking industry, Landon knows Don’s and Joey’s efforts are appreciated. “Having experts like Don and Joey on hand gives our customer peace of mind,” Landon said. “They don’t need to know how their truck fleet technology works or worry about fixing it because Don and Joey have it covered.
